Paint it Black

Bit of a shot in the dark here, but just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with black paint that I am experiencing:

A few years back I finally switched from Citadel Colour paints to Game Colour.  I was very satisfied with the quality, no problems.  But the second pot of GC black that I bought dried with a glossy sheen.  I ensured that I was shaking it up well to mix it, but this issue persisted.  Thinking that I may have got a duff batch, I've bought another pot, but this has the same problem.  I'm considering trying a different brand for my black paint, but just asking here in case anyone has any tips to solve this?  Cheers for any suggestions!

  1. I use Jo Sonja's artist acrylic black, in a 250mL bottle. Has lasted for years, and is the flattest smoothest blackest black.

  2. Tamiya X-20A thinner does a great job of keeping stopping the paint hardening.

  3. Try adding a whole lot of matte medium to it. Should knock the sheen right off :)

  4. The only time I've encountered that problem is when I haven't shaken it enough, but you might want to try out the Vallejo Model Color range too.

  5. Many thanks for all your tips - plenty to try out there!

Yesterday I managed to resurrect a little black from the bottom of my original pot, & it dried lovely & matte, so I feel like Game Colour's recipe may have changed slightly. But I'll try an ultra-thorough shake & stir to see if that fixes my latest pots; & if that doesn't work, I'll be using your tips. Thanks again all.
